This reading time calculator starts by counting how many words appear in your text. It then divides that number by an average reading speed, measured in words per minute (WPM).
By default we use a silent reading speed of about 238 WPM, which is a realistic rate for most adults reading familiar, non-technical content. You can change this value with the slider to better match your own pace. For speaking time, we use a slower fixed rate to match typical out-loud delivery.
Finally, we convert the result into minutes and seconds, so you see a friendly estimate like “3 min 20 sec”.
Research suggests that most adults read at roughly 200–250 words per minute when reading for understanding and comfort. Skimming can be much faster, while deep study of technical material can be considerably slower.
The default 238 WPM used here sits in the middle of that range. If you know that you read faster or slower, move the slider until the estimates feel right for you.
Yes. The “Out loud” time estimate uses a slower fixed reading speed of about 183 WPM, which better reflects real-world speaking pace.
This is helpful when you’re preparing presentations, talks, webinars, podcasts, or video scripts. It gives you a quick sense of whether your script will fit within a given time slot.
Keep in mind that pauses, ad-libbing, and audience interaction will slightly increase your total speaking time beyond the raw estimate.
At an average silent reading speed of around 238 WPM, a 1,000-word article takes roughly 4–5 minutes to read.
If you read that same text out loud at about 183 WPM, you’re looking at approximately 5–6 minutes of speaking time. You can verify this by entering 1,000 words into the calculator and checking both the silent and out-loud estimates.
To estimate book reading time, start with a rough word count. Many average-length novels contain 70,000–90,000 words, while shorter books may be closer to 40,000.
Divide the total word count by your reading speed. For example, 70,000 words at 238 WPM is about 294 minutes—or just under 5 hours. You can also paste a sample chapter into this tool to see how it feels and extrapolate from there.
Remember that your pace may change based on difficulty, interest, and how tired you are, so treat any estimate as a helpful guideline rather than an exact prediction.
